On Monday, September 9, PACE Burlington was filled with joy and celebration as the staff and participants gathered together to honor a truly remarkable milestone – Ms. Doris Byrd’s 100th birthday! Ms. Byrd, a beloved participant at the PACE center, celebrated this special occasion surrounded by her “second family” at PACE, sharing memories and life lessons that have shaped her century-long journey.
Ms. Byrd’s life story is one of resilience, faith, and love for family. Reflecting on the biggest changes she’s witnessed over her lifetime, she shared how transportation has evolved from walking and horse-drawn buggies to Ford cars. “We used to walk to church,” she recalled. “Then we got a buggy, and later, we had a car. We would stop and give rides to others who were walking on the road.” She fondly remembered the days of the T-Model, A-Model, and V-8 Model Fords, followed by Chevrolets. Her eyes sparkled as she recounted these memories, showcasing her still-sharp mind and the wisdom gained from a century of experiences.
When asked what advice she would give to younger generations, Ms. Byrd’s answer was simple yet profound: “Go to church to live a fulfilling life and carry your children to church. Take care of the children.” Her life has been deeply rooted in faith and family, values she holds dear and encourages others to embrace.
One of Ms. Byrd’s happiest memories is from when she was just eight years old. After losing her mother to Influenza at the tender age of two and a half, her father and extended family stepped in to raise her and her sister. Despite the hardship of losing a parent, Ms. Byrd recalls the joy she felt when her father would come home from work with a candy bag just for her. “I didn’t know the difference because I was so young. I just knew I didn’t have a mom. But I was well taken care of,” she said with a smile, reflecting on the love and support she received during her early years.
Growing up on a farm, Ms. Byrd learned the importance of self-sufficiency and hard work. She described how her family raised most of what they ate and how she contributed by sewing robes for the church and dresses for her children. “I am faithful,” she said, reflecting on the challenges she faced and overcame. “When I didn’t think I could make it, I know it was ‘Him’ [God] that got me through.”
Ms. Byrd’s positive spirit and gratitude were evident as she expressed appreciation for the care and support she receives at PACE Burlington and the friendships she’s made with her peers and staff members over the years. She was especially moved by the special birthday celebration organized for her, where Representative Foushee recognized her for reaching this incredible milestone. She enjoyed a special menu at the center, which included all of her favorite foods.
“PACE made my birthday so special, and I will always cherish them for making such a positive impact on my life,” she said, followed by an optimistic smile. She winked and said “I look forward to celebrating my 101st birthday with my PACE family again next year.”
As Ms. Byrd celebrated her 100th year of life, she reminded everyone at PACE Burlington of the importance of community, faith, and love. With her favorite pink colors, a love for gladiolus flowers and red roses, and a sweet tooth for Reese’s peanut butter cups and pecan pies, she truly is a testament to living a full and joyful life. Her presence is a blessing to all who know her, and her wisdom and warmth continue to inspire those around her. Here’s to Ms. Doris Byrd and the extraordinary century she has lived! PACE is grateful to be a part of her journey!
