Taking Action During National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Taking Action During National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: Let’s Close the Information Gap

Every March, we recognize National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. At Piedmont Health, this isn’t just a calendar event; it’s a vital opportunity for us to share a message that could save your life or the life of someone you love.

We’re starting this month with a powerful and hopeful fact: Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer when caught early.

The Knowledge We Need to Share

However, we face a major challenge in community health: too many people don’t know this. According to data, over half of Americans (52%) are unaware that this cancer can be prevented.

We also know that 96% of people say they would be more likely to get screened if they did know colorectal cancer was preventable.

Our goal this March is to bridge this gap. We need to turn that “if I knew” into action.

The Power of Prevention: How Screening Works

Unlike many screening tests that only detect cancer, colorectal cancer screening (specifically a colonoscopy) can actually prevent it.

These screenings allow doctors to find and remove polyps—small growths that could later develop into cancer. If polyps are removed, the potential cancer is removed too. When screening finds cancer that has already developed, catching it early often means it is highly treatable and curable.

What Piedmont Health Is Doing and How You Can Help

We can change the statistics and save more lives by making sure everyone understands the power of screening.

  • Share the Facts: When you talk to friends and family this month, don’t just say “get screened.” Tell them why. Remind them that knowledge is power and that Screening Saves Lives.

  • Know Your Risk: Talk to your doctor about your personal risk. Age, family history, and lifestyle factors can all play a role.

  • Schedule Your Screening: For most adults at average risk, screening is recommended to start at age 45.

Start the Conversation at Piedmont Health

Our care teams at Piedmont Health are here to help you navigate this important health decision. The best place to start is with a conversation.

During your next visit, please ask your care team about colorectal cancer screening. We are happy to answer your questions, explain the options (which can often include non-invasive at-home tests), and help you schedule the test that is right for you.

Let’s use this Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month to educate, empower, and take action for a healthier future in our community.
